A look back at 2013

According to several news outlets, the top stories in the United States for the past year include Obamacare, the Boston Marathon bombing, and acquittal of George Zimmerman in the trial of Travyon Martin. The federal government shutdown and the leaks of classified intelligence by NSA-contractor Edward Snowden and his flight to Russia are also listed.

The royal baby birth of Prince George in England, installation of a new Pope in the Vatican, the Syrian Civil war and North Korean missile threats are among the top national stories for the year 2013.

The year in sports began with Alabama downing Notre Dame for the Bowl Championship game, and the electrical failure at the Super Bowl in New Orleans. The Baltimore Ravens prevailed at the Super Bowl. The Chicago Blackhawks earned the Stanley Cup, while the Boston Red Sox took the World Series Championship. The Miami Heat won their second straight NBA Championship, defeating the San Antonio Spurs. Jimmie Johnson took home his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

Notable deaths in the past year include Nelson Mandela, James Gandolfini, Paul Walker, Cory Monteith (Glee), Mindy McCready, Esther Williams, Jonathan Winters, Margaret Thatcher, Annette Funicello, C. Everett Koop, Jean Stapleton, Lou Reed (Velvet Underground), Tom Clancy, Pauline Phillips (Dear Abby), Ed Koch (former New York City mayor), Stan Musial, George Jones and Roger Ebert.

Jackson and Sophia are the top names for new babies born in the United States in 2013. Rounding out the top five in the United States are Aiden and Liam and Lucas and Noah for boys and Emma, Olivia, Isabella and Mia for little girls.
