Freshman through senior students from area high schools attended Tuesday’s performance of Black Eagle that was presented at the Minnesota West CTC Fine Arts Theater in Worthington. The performance retold the dynamic story of Dr. Ronald McNair, who was the African American scientist aboard the space shuttle Challenger.

Actor Shawn Hamilton, Minneapolis, MN (formerly of Houston, Texas) kept the audience’s attention as he re-enacted events of Dr. McNair’s life. He relayed the story of a nine year-old Ron McNair who one day, in 1959, refused to leave the segregated Lake City Public Library, Lake City, South Carolina, without being allowed to check out his books. The police were called, as well as McNair’s mother. He was finally allowed to take his checked out books home to read. That library now is called the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Life History Center.

Nicknamed “Gizmo” because of his mechanical genius, Dr. McNair excelled academically through high school and college. He was awarded a state scholarship to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) in Greensboro. He graduated magna cum laude and was named a Ford Foundation Fellow and Presidential Scholar. He also received a scholarship to continue his studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
