Completing the final chapter of a great state officer year, Marissa Kunerth-State FCCLA President elect, and the other seven officers demonstrated exactly what their state theme meant. “Courage to Pursue…Dreams Come True” was selected as this year's theme by the 2013-2014 state officer team. Throughout the 3-day state conference, the FCCLA members saw the potential to make their dreams a reality!

Thursday kicked off with STAR Event competition and the opening general session. Featured speaker, Sam Glenn, literally painted a picture of how one's dreams can take us to great places. A second speaker, Evelyn Vonn Banks-Retired Command Master Chief in the US Navy, shared her dreams and accomplishments as she earned the senior most enlisted female status in the Navy. Members were awed by all the places she had been and things she did!! Marissa Kunerth and Mrs. Elder attended a private reception with Ms. Vonn Banks and learned so much about her future dreams which were influenced by this student leadership team. For you see, Ms. Vonn Banks met the officers last October on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. She was going to deliver a 2 minute speech marking her retirement but with the Government shut down, no speeches were allowed. These MN officers agreed to hear her speak. What a partnership evolved!!!!

Friday, more STAR Events took place along with a Don't Drive Distracted Summit. Marrisa Kunerth and Sammy Jo Severance hosted the event that featured speakers, Reggie Shaw and Sontiana Brandts. Reggie's decision to text while driving resulted in an accident that killed two men. Santiana, on the other hand, was injured in an accident where she was the one texting and driving. Her injuries include being paralyzed from the chest down. Another speaker, JD Lewis-Foundation Twelve in Twelve organizer, told the attendees about his 12 months of good deeds. He and his two sons traveled to 7 continents in 12 months to do good deeds. Now back home, his goal is to encourage others to do their part in making a difference in the world! The last speaker session was lead by current MN National Officer, Olivia Wicklund. and she encouraged all to build their character. She included much of the message that she learned through her Rachel's Challenge training. What a chain reaction schools could achieve if people would go out of their way to show compassion.

Several Fulda members were pursuing their own leadership challenges. Two, Tatym Zins and Mathias Kunerth, were running for region office while Claire Westra was a state peer education team candidate. All three were elected! Courtney Heppler was a state officer candidate and she was elected. Marissa Kunerth was seeking endorsement to be the Minnesota FCCLA national officer candidate. Both were successful. Courtney Heppler is the new MN State FCCLA President Elect while Marissa Kunerth is the new MN State President! That means back to back State Presidents from the same chapter. That feat has only been accomplished by one other chapter is the history of Minnesota FCCLA!!!!

When the STAR Events awards were read, five Fulda groups were named as national advancers. Earning the right to represent MN at the San Antonio meeting in July are Marissa Kunerth, Katelyn Renneke, Christine Salentiny, Taylor Schettler, Morgan Rachuy, Bailey Onken, Nicole Sauer, Kade Clarke, Aron Hulstein, Brandon Everett, Mathias Kunerth, Courtney Zins, Courtney Heppler, and Claire Westra. In fact, Aron and Brandon qualified in two events but due to the national rules, but they can only enter one.
