Fulda s Alex Holmes outperformed a field of 14 other pole vaulters at the Section 3A True Team high school track and field meet at Slayton Monday (May 5), winning his favorite event by being the only competitor to clear 11 feet, six inches.

Holmes, a junior, scored 24 points for the Raiders with his winning performance.

Three other Raiders had top-five placings in the huge meet, which featured 12 competing teams.

Sophomore Brian Fenske finished fourth (among 24 runners) in the 400 meter dash, clocking a time of 54.0l and senior Matt Thier whirled the discus 122-1 to place fourth among 23 throwers.

Senior Matt Kunerth placed fifth, in a field of 21 triple jumpers, with a leap of 38-7.

Those three high-placing efforts combined for 62 more points for the Raiders, who racked up a total of 364 for the meet --- good enough for seventh place in the team standings.

Fulda s top performance in the girls events came from seniors Myah Holinka and Melissa Gehl, along with freshmen Alyssa Williams and Nicole Madison.

Gehl placed eighth in the high jump (4-6), Madison was eighth in the shot put (29-5º), while both Williams and Holinka cleared 6-6 in the pole vault and placed eighth and ninth, respectively.

The Raiders scored a total of 249 points in the girls meet, finishing in 11th place, 17 points ahead of Hills-Beaver Creek and just three points behind Adrian.

Luverne claimed the team championship in each division and will send both their girls and boys teams to next week s (May 17) State True Meet Meet at Stillwater.

Full details of the Raiders performances at Monday’s True Team Meet will appear in next week’s issue of the Fulda Free Press, along with results of Fulda’s participation in a junior high meet at Tracy on April 15.
