Tomek Schenk and his wife, Gabby, residents of Fulda, Germany, were in Fulda, Minnesota, Sunday and Monday.

“Tomek was so excited to learn that there was a Fulda in Minnesota. Our main purpose for coming here was so we could visit our Fulda’s sister city, ” Gabby stated. “I am from Robbinsdale, MN, and was studying in Germany when I met him. He was very interested in learning about the history of Fulda, MN, and why the city is named after Fulda, Germany.”

The Schenks, along with their almost two-year-old daughter, Izdora, and their almost two-month-old son, Diego, Gabby’s mother, Jenne McGovern (Robbinsdale, MN), and Gabby’s siblings Natasha, Kris, and Santiago Acuña arrived in Fulda on Sunday evening. “One month ago, through the geocaching site, we had issued an invitation for others to come meet us at Seven Mile Park at 7 p.m. Your school teacher, Jeanette Sleeper, responded that she would come. We invited your mayor, Greg Ommen, and he came. We had a very good time visiting last night,” Tomek Schenk said.

During their visit, the Schenks shared beer, chocolate, and meats from their area of Germany.

(Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt hosted on the internet in which people from around the world participate in. “Using the clues that are given, you can geocache in many different countries and you see places that you wouldn’t normally see,” Gabby explained. The Schenk family, as well as his extended family, enjoy geocaching.)

“Before we left Germany, a friend of ours told the Fulda, Germany mayor that we were coming to visit. He sent a selection of brochures, a book, and a cd about our city along for your mayor. He said that the two Fulda’s have had connections back and forth for many years, and was exited that we would be visiting here. He also extended an invitation for anyone from Fulda, Minnesota to come visit in Fulda, Germany,” Tomek said.

On Sunday evening, Tomek presented Fulda, Minnesota mayor, Greg Ommen, with the gift from the Fulda, Germany mayor. He, in turn, presented Tomek with items such as Fulda Wood Duck Buttons, shirts, a travel mug and other Fulda memorabilia. “We had a very nice time visiting about our two cities. It was very interesting. I learned that Fulda, Germany is a lot larger than I thought it was,” Mayor Ommen commented.
