Activities for all ages at the Murray County Fair

August 7, 2014

by Margie Anderson
From one to one hundred one, there is something for all ages at this year's Murray County Fair. Fair schedules have been printed in local papers, announcements have been heard on local radio stations, and talk around town has turned to what's happening at the Murray County Fair this summer.

Murray County 4-H'ers are busy training their livestock and preparing their exhibits for display at the county fair. The barns will be full and the 4-H Building Exhibit Hall will be bursting at the walls with interesting exhibits. Murray County 4-H families extend to you an invitation to the county fair and check it out.

Come early in the day and enjoy breakfast at the 4-H Food Stand. It will open at 8:00 a.m. each day of the fair. New to the breakfast menu are delicious, fluffy pancakes. If you stay late in the day, you can enjoy another new item on the menu, Cold Stone ice cream! The 4-H Food Stand closes each day at 9:00 p.m., except Saturday when it will close at 6 p.m.

Who makes the best brownies in the county? Find out by entering the Fun Food Challenge, sponsored by Murray County 4-H. Entries from all ages (4-H membership not required) can be brought to the 4-H Building on Wednesday, August 13 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Bring one brownie on a paper plate with the recipe. Brownies should be made from scratch or a box adaptation. Each participant will receive a 4-H Food Stand coupon just for entering. Prizes will be awarded in categories yet to be determined. Those might include the “most chocolatey”, “I can taste chocolate and ?”, “best traditional” and so on.

Maybe treasure hunts are more your thing. Each day of the fair, two 4-H capsules will be hidden in the Exhibit Hall. Enclosed in the capsule will be a coupon for a free 4-H refillable soda cup (the finder also keeps the cool 4-H capsule). Each day two lucky hunters will have all the free soda they can drink in a day!

4-H photography exhibitors invite anyone and everyone to enjoy their photos and also to vote for the Peoples' Choice award winners. Voting will take place from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13. For each vote that a 4-H'er receives, it could win them free prints. The top three vote-getters will receive gift cards from Thrifty White Drug in Slayton.

Dirt never tasted so good! Well at least the dirt cake that will be served to youngsters on Friday night, August 15 at the 4-H Building. Murray County 4-H Ambassadors welcome youth to come into the Exhibit Hall and enjoy a free dish of dirt cake from 7:00-7:30 p.m.

What are you looking forward to at the Murray County Fair? There's a lot going on each day of the fair and something for all ages. Why not start and end your day at the 4-H Building during the Murray County Fair?
