Dragons score in seventh, claim 3-2 win over HL/O-Fulda Coyotes

Scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning last Tuesday (April 23), the host Adrian Dragons claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena in Red Rock Conference high school baseball action.

The game was close and low scoring all the way with Coyote sophomore pitcher Eli Fest holding the Dragons scoreless in five of the seven innings.

After HL-O / Fulda earned a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Adrian crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the frame. The Coyotes tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third and neither team scored again until Adrian’s winning run came home on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

Fest struck out eight consecutive batters, including striking out the side in order in both the fourth and fifth innings, finishing with 11 strikeouts for the game. He gave up just four hits (two singles in the first, a single in the sixth and a leadoff double in the seventh). That seventh-inning double led to the game’s winning run.

After issuing back-to-back walks to start the game, Fest settled in and did not walk another Dragon. But a bases loaded walk to Adrian’s seventh hitter in the bottom of the first gave the Dragons their second run. The first Adrian run came home on an RBI single (following two walks).

Senior shortstop Eli Becker scored the game’s first run, streaking home on an RBI single by freshman first baseman Tyson Cotter in the Coyotes first trip to the plate.
