Dutchmen outscore Coyotes’ varsity baseball team, 10-7

Plating six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning last Thursday (April 18) the host Edgerton / Southwest Minnesota Christian Flying Dutchmen prevailed with a 10-7 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda in a high school varsity baseball game at Edgerton.

The game, originally scheduled to be played in Heron Lake, was moved to Edgerton when outfield conditions at HL’s Laker Field were too wet to play on. The contest was a Red Rock Conference game and it was the first loss for the Coyotes, who fell to 2-1 in the conference and are now 3-2 for the season.

After several lead changes in the earlier innings, the Dutchmen took control with their big surge in the sixth frame. Three hits, a trio of walks and three errors all combined to help E / SWMC push across those deciding runs, changing a 4-4 tie into a 10-4 lead.

The Coyotes, who had tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, rallied with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh, but came up short against the Dutchmen in the high-scoring contest.

A double by Eli Becker and an RBI single by Andrew Madsen produced the game’s first run in the top of the third. The Dutchmen countered with a single run in the bottom of the same frame and then took a 4-1 lead by crossing the plate three times in the bottom of the fourth.

HL-O / Fulda scored twice in the top of the fifth (back-to-back singles by Becker and Matt Madsen), a deep RBI sacrifice fly by Andrew Madsen and a Dutchmen throwing error.
