Eagles roll past Coyotes, 76-30 Salentiny leads HL-O/F with six points, five rebounds

Jumping out to a quick 9-0 lead, the Southwest Christian Eagles rolled to a 76-30 victory over the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes in a Red Rock Conference high school girls’ basketball game last Thursday night (December 12) in Edgerton.

Ten players scored for the Eagles, who built a commanding 40-15 lead at halftime and went 18-for-21 from the free-throw line as a team.

SWC scored the first 15 points of the second half to take a 55-15 advantage, as the Eagles had 18 steals — to go along with 35 deflections — as a team and forced several other turnovers.

“SWC is one of the best teams defensively in the area,” Coyotes head coach Andy Oakland said. “They constantly put pressure on you in the full-court and then are able to make adjustments quickly in the half-court. Their ability to force us into a lot of turnovers really hurt us, and their switching on defense caused us some problems, as well.”

Rebecca Salentiny (4-for-4 on free throws) led the Coyotes with six points and five rebounds, while Faith White scored five points on 5-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line.

“Rebecca and Faith came into the game late and gave us a spark that we were missing,” Oakland said. “They both attacked the basket, went after rebounds, found ways to score and contributed in a variety of ways. We need more of those things from all of our girls when they come into the game.”
