An impressive surge by the visiting Southwest Minnesota Christian High School Eagles in the closing minutes of the first half Saturday afternoon (January 26) proved to the decisive difference in a Red Rock Conference varsity girls’ basketball game on the Fulda court against the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes.
The strong scoring burst by the Eagles stretched the halftime score to 46-16. The Coyotes put 23 points on the board in the second half, coming up on the short end of an 81-39 final.
“We scored first and played competitively with a very good team for the first 10 minutes,” summed up Coyotes assistant coach Jonathon Curry, who is charge of the varsity while head coach Anna Brandt is away for a week of military training. “Once, the Eagles got rolling they took control.”
A total of nine girls contributed statistically for the Coyotes, who were scheduled to host Edgerton (Monday, January 28) and Wabasso (Tuesday, January 29), both at Okabena, before traveling southeast to East Chain to battle with the combination of Truman, Martin Luther and Granada-Huntley-East Chain in a non-conference clash Friday, February 1.
Freshman Emily Madison led HLOF in both scoring and rebounding, tallying eight points and snagging seven rebounds against the Eagles. Emily also had a steal and blocked an Eagle shot attempt.
