F/MCC Youth Wrestling Warrior Team Advances to State Tournament

The youth wrestling K-6 team advanced to the Northland Youth Wrestling Association state tournament to be held April 4-7, 2019 in Rochester MN.

The unseeded Warriors placed 6th in the Region 2 qualifier held on Saturday March 16 in Tracy.

The Warriors started off the tournament with a dual against #7 seeded Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial.  The team came up short losing 49-28 in a battle that had many matches that just didn’t go the Warriors way.  The team had a bye in the first round of losers bracket and then was up against #8 seed United South Central (Wells Area).  The team wrestled very well coming out victorious with a 45-28 win.  Then up was #5 Adrian whom the Warriors had been defeated by earlier in the year 46-31.

Our Warriors showed up when most needed this year, with a win it would guarantee a trip to the state tournament.  The Warriors defeated Adrian 34-33 with every match being a deciding factor in the win.

Up next for the Warriors was a very tough #2 Marshall/Lakeview/RTR.  The team was defeated by a score of 55-24.  In the fifth place dual next up for us was #6 St. Peter.  Our Warriors were a bit tired out knowing we had clinched a state birth and lost 54-30.  The F/MCC team then had earned sixth place with a trip to Rochester coming up.

The NYWA State Tournament consists of 32 teams throughout the whole state.  The state is divided into five regions with six teams from every region punching their ticket. Then the final two teams to make the 32 are drawn from the regions with the most teams.  Our region consists of teams south of US HWY 212 and west of Interstate 35.

The team will wrestle in five duals at the state tournament in a pool play format on April 6 and 7.

The state tournament also consists of an individual tournament which is ran in Rochester as well on those dates.  Our Warriors will try to qualify individually for that on Saturday March 23 in Windom.  The top three place winners in each bracket, which is divided by weight and age earn a trip.

Congratulations boys on a great season.
