During Fire Prevention Week October 9-13, Fulda fire fighters invited Fulda Elementary School and St. Paul’s Lutheran School students to the Fulda Fire Hall to learn about fire prevention and safety.
Fire Chief Dave Baumhoefner, assisted by firemen Shawn Ethridge, Darby Stewart, Brian Ackerman, Willie Sanow, Gary Clarke and Jon Nau, greeted the classes of students as they arrived at the fire hall.
Chief Baumhoefner started the educational piece by showing the students a home fire alarm and asking if they knew what it was, as well as how to check to see if the battery was working, and when to change out the batteries.
Then he talked about this year’s theme of Every Second Counts, Have 2 Ways Out, reviewing what to do should a building they are in catch fire. “What are usually your two ways out of a room?” Chief Baumhoefner asked? The students knew that they were the door and a window. “If you can’t get out your door, go to your window. If you have to, use something to break the window out and toss items from your room out on the lawn. We will see that when we walk around the house,” Chief Baumhoefner stated.
