BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

Monday, May 9, 2016 – 6:00 P.M.

High School Library

The Board of Education meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson, Stan Kramer.

Members present were Don Tiesler, Tom Klein, Phil Kramer, Jason Appel, Stan Kramer, Linda Lund and Theane Pagel.  Others present were Superintendent Luther Onken, H.S. Principal Gregg Slaathaug, Elementary Principal Mike Pagel, Loren Carlson, Steph Strenge, Colby Pack, Kayla Westra, Dayton Westra, Karsten Piper, Yvonne Cannon and Jerry Johnson.

Motion by Tom Klein, seconded by Don Tiesler to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried.

Motion by Linda, seconded by Tom Klein to approve the Consent Agenda, which included the following items: Minutes from Regular Board Meeting April 11, 2016, Bills, Imprest Fund Report, Activity Fund Report and Financial Report.  Approved hiring Summer staff including: Summer Custodial-Mitch Winter, Allison Winter, Lawn Mowing-Dean McNeal and Randy Kremer, Summer Recreation Coordinator-Jess Hogan, Summer Recreation Employees-Courtney Tiesler, Courtney Hulstein, Todd Peterson and Bennett Appel.  Approved building lease agreement with St. Gabriel’s. Approved designating Superintendent Luther Onken as Identified Official with Authority to authorize user access to MDE secure websites for Fulda Public Schools. Approved contract for custodian-Willie Sanow. Motion carried.

Open Forum

Karsten Piper spoke about PSEO and better communication between administration and parents. Requested that administration reserve votes until they have all info and that there be a parental advisory board.

Kayla Westra spoke about PSEO and the letter that went out.  Feels this is bullying the PSEO students.  Feels students shouldn’t have to leave the school during PSEO classes.

Yvonne Cannon spoke addressing removing PSEO students from Fulda School during PSEO classes.  Handbook says ALL students.  Please don’t remove the students.

Dayton Westra spoke of the roles of the school, the administration and the school board.  Stated that the #1 mission is student achievement.

Mr. Slaathaug’s Report

•Speech, FFA, FCCLA, BPA participated in section, state and national contests

•Track and Golf schedules going well with the weather

•Athletic scheduling and officials contracts for 16-17 are complete

•Band had solos/ensembles and band/choir concerts coming up. Changes to plans for Band Trips

•NHS Blood Drive April 13th

•Accuplacer May 5th

•Scheduling Complete

•PSEO recommended guidelines

•Prom May 7th

•Awards Day May 26th

•Graduation May 27th

•NHS induction ceremony May 10th – 9 new members

•Teacher Evaluations are complete

Community Ed

•Pool running on winter hours, summer hours start in June

•Presented program updates

•Fulda Community Players “Sunrise at Campobello” had good attendance.

•Thank you to Wilma Lindquist and Margaret Popp for 30 years of productions!

•Summer Rec registrations went out

•Summer brochures will be in the mail soon

Discussed District Goals

Committee met and suggested changes/additions: proposed musical for 2016-17, elementary and high school staff coordinating the transition from elementary to Jr. High curriculum, elementary reviewing reading curriculum, technology recommendations.

Motion by Tom Klein, seconded by Theane Pagel to approve membership in MSHSL.  Motion carried.

Motion by Linda Lund, seconded by Don Tiesler to approve Joint Powers Agreement with MCC for ECSE Teacher.  Motion carried.

Motion by Don Tiesler, seconded by Ton Klein to approve Quote from Red Rock Landscaping for lawn spraying.  Motion carried.

Motion by Phil Kramer, seconded by Linda Lund to approve elementary school cafeteria remodeling project.  Motion carried.

Mr. Cheadle nominated Fulda Public School for Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
