FULDA PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

Monday, May 14, 2018 – 6:00 P.M.

The Board of Education meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by Chairperson, Don Tiesler.

Members present were Don Tiesler, Brian VanderBeek, Phil Kramer, Jason Appel, Stan Kramer and Kayla Clarke. Absent was Theane Pagel.  Others present were Superintendent Ann Wendorff, Elementary Principal Mike Pagel, High School Principal Tyson Walker, Athletic Director Colby Pack, John Nau, Kristin Nau, Scott Peterson, Theresa Roberts, Aaron Cheadle, Rachel Cheadle, Lisa Staples and Norma Dittman.

Motion by Phil Kramer, seconded by Brian VanderBeek to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried.

Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Kayla Clarke to approve the Consent Agenda, which included the following items: Minutes from Regular Board Meeting April 9, 2018, Bills, Activity Fund Report and Financial Report. Acknowledged Open Enrollment to Adrian for Einck. Approved hiring Summer staff including: Summer Recreation Coordinator-Andrew Olson, Summer Recreation Employees-Kasey Hermeling, Nikki Madison, Eli Gonzalez and Dalton Slinger. Approved 2018-19 Contract for School Nurse – Rachel Isder. Approved 2018-19 and Summer 2018 Contracts for ECSE Teacher – Sara Zins.  Approved letter of resignation from custodian – Will Riley. Approved designating Superintendent Loy Woelber as Identified Official with Authority to authorize user access to MDE secure websites for Fulda Public Schools. Approved Warrior Wrestling golf tournament fundraiser.  Approved letter of resignation from Library Paraprofessional – Brenda Sauer.  Motion carried.

Open Forum

None

Theresa Roberts reported to the board on the Nobles Coop Electric Project. NCE is going to put in underground wires to replace some of the low hanging wires and put in some new transformers.  Most will be done with underground boring. They are hoping to do the project in June.  Any damage to property will be taken care of by the contractor.

Mr. Pagel’s Report

• Activities: Safety Patrol supper, class field trips, National Ride Your Bike to School Day, Elementary spring concert, Elementary Track & Field.

• Teacher appreciation week was held.  Thank you to all who helped and participated.

• Elementary Color Run is May 18th.

• Last day of school is May 25th.

Mr. Walker’s Report

• Enrollment down by 1.

• 7th & 8th grade took a trip to Nobles Coop Electric. Had motivational speaker and many demonstrations, rides and hands on activities.

• National Honor Society has 8 new inductees. 7 sophomores and 1 junior.

• Finalizing Professional Development schedule for certified staff on May 29th and 30th.

• Thank you to all who helped with everything during my father’s illness and death!

Community Ed

• Pool needs lifeguards!  Holly Rohlik is offering lifeguard training class May 18-20.

• Thank you to Vicki Deuschle and the Evelyn Barr Estate for the donation to repair pump #1 and purchase a new vacuum.

• Plans approved by the State of MN and work is scheduled for mid-June.

• Summer brochure has been mailed

o Kayla Clarke asked if we could use the school instant alert system to notify parents of summer rec changes due to weather.

Mr. Pack’s Report

• Activities have been delayed due to weather.

• Most new uniforms have been ordered.

• Working on setting up coaching staff.

• Only have two years left on life cycle for football helmets. May be able to purchase over the next couple of years. Have 16 that could be painted and recertified for $50.00 each and have a 3-7 year life.  Would like to order 15 new helmets at $265.00 each.

Ms.Wendorff’s Report

• Highlighted happenings in the buildings

• Graduation is May 25, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Would like as many board members in attendance as possible.

Motion by Phil Kramer, seconded by Brian VanderBeek to approve membership in MSHSL.  Motion carried.

Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Kayla Clarke to approve Joint Powers Agreement with MCC for ECSE Teacher (Fulda = 75%/MCC = 25%).  Motion carried.

Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Phil Kramer to approve 2018-19 Renewal Rates from SW/WC Service Cooperative for Health Insurance.  Motion carried.

Motion by Brian VanderBeek, seconded by Phil Kramer to approve 2017-18 contract for Elementary Principal Mike Pagel.  Motion carried.

Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Kayla Clarke to approve quote from Rock River Landscape for spraying and fertilizing of school property.  Motion carried.

Motion by Phil Kramer, seconded by Jason Appel to approve transportation contract with Witzel Bus Service for 2018-20.  Motion carried.

Discussion on excess/outdated equipment:

Vehicle trade possibilities – Trade District 2008 suburban for 2017 Chevy 12 passenger van.  Suburban has approximately 100,000 miles and will not be approved for transporting students within 1-2 years.  Chevy van has approximately 12,000 miles.  Motion by Brian VanderBeek, seconded by Jason Appel to approve trading 2008 Suburban for a 2017 Chevy van with a trade difference of $7,000.  Motion carried.

Pull behind lawn sprayer – Sprayer is no longer used by district.  Motion by Brian VanderBeek, seconded by Kayla Clarke to offer sprayer for public bid.  Motion carried.

John Nau, Kristin Nau, Scott Peterson – talked about the possibility of renting the gym and 3 rooms at the high school on Sundays from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm for Solid Rock Assembly.  Possible start date of August 19. Kayla, Jason and Loy will be on a committee to research and prepare information for a vote at the June meeting.

Theresa would like to find someone with a boilers license to disassemble and clean boilers this summer.

Theresa will look into putting in a bid on the Fulda City Pick-up.

Discussion on Red Chevy school van.  Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Phil Kramer to declare the Red Chevy Van as excess equipment and offer for public bid.  Motion carried.

Motion Stan Kramer, seconded by Phil Kramer to approve Nobles Cooperative Electric project on school property.  Motion carried.

Motion by Stan Kramer, seconded by Brian VanderBeek to approve purchasing 15 new football helmets at Colby’s discretion.  Motion carried.
