After a two-week stretch of close misses, the Fulda Raider girls got a big win on Friday night over Madelia, 63-34. The Raiders opened the games with a loss to Adrian, followed by close, hard-fought losses to Ellsworth and Westbrook-Walnut Grove before Friday night’s win.
Against Adrian, the Dragons opened the game on a strong run and the Raiders were never able to recover. Adrian’s aggressive, pressing defense gave the Raiders trouble as they were only able to score 24 points on the night and trailed 33-12 at halftime. In the second half the Raiders played better, keeping the score near the halftime deficit until a late 10-0 Dragon run when the game had already been decided. McKenzie Evers led the Raiders with 14 of the team’s 24 points. Paige Bullerman and Lexi Slater had 17 and 14 points for Adrian.
A few days later Fulda made almost the same trip, passing through Adrian on their way to Ellsworth. The game was close throughout, with the Panthers leading early and the Raiders fighting back to take a 23-19 halftime lead. Some hot shooting to start the half made it a tie game once again and the entire second half was a back and forth affair. Both teams made big shots in the second half, and with a 2 point lead late, Ellsworth went 8 of 9 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
