Fulda Raider girls go 1-1 in the first full week of the season

The Fulda Raiders Girls’ Basketball team has hit the ground running with three games in by December 1st, and went 1-1 this week, downing Heron Lake-Okabena 54-37 before falling to Red Rock Central 52-38. The Raiders utilized great defense to defeat the Wildcats, but ran into a tough foe in a big, physical Falcons team.

On Tuesday night, the Raiders capitalized on turnovers to help defeat HL-O. It was the Wildcats, however, who jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead led by Kiana Leighty. Fulda quickly recovered behind 8 points from McKenzie Evers and 6 from Emily Schroer to take a 23-16 lead at halftime. The Raiders made up for cold shooting (2-19 from 3-point range in the 1st half, 3-31 in the game) by forcing 25 Wildcat turnovers. It was through their defense that Fulda was able to pull away in the second half, eventually going on multiple runs to lead by as many as 23 in the game before winning by the final 54-37 margin.

McKenzie Evers led the Raiders with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Emily Schroer added another double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. Evany Luna and Camryn Baumhoefner chipped in 10 points for a balanced Raider attack, and Kelsey Fuerstenberg had 7 points and 7 rebounds. For the Wildcats, Kiana Leighty had 15 points, and Haley Liepold added 8.
