Raider three-sport athlete later excelled in college
One of Fulda High School’s best all-around female athletes, Nancy Overman capped her stellar career as a Raider in the spring of 1994 with a record-setting performance in the Class A state track and field meet at the National Sports Complex in Blaine.
Entering the state meet as the defending runner-up in the discus, having whirled the platter a distance of 139 feet, four inches to claim the second-place silver medal in 1993, Overman exceeded that mark by nearly 15 feet in ’94 and won the event with a distance that stood as the state-meet record for 22 years.
Her winning distance measured right at 154 feet (even) or 154’0” and continued to be the best throw ever recorded in Class A state-meet competition until two years ago when Jaime Salone, a senior at the Blake School in Minneapolis, recorded a toss of 155’1” on her sixth and final throw, bettering Overman’s 1994 mark by 13 inches.
“Records are set and made to be broken,” Overman said of her long-standing accomplishment. “I know that I had a real good throw when it left my hand, but I didn’t think that it would be a state-meet record and I was surprised that it lasted so long.”
Overman, who also excelled in the shot put and had placed second at the state meet in 1993 in that event with a distance of 40-7, had been winning meets all season and had reached distances in the 140-foot range, but had never uncorked a throw of over 150 feet before.
“I remember the blue track at Blaine,” recalled Overman, who was a four-year starter for Coach Loren Carlson on some powerhouse Raider basketball teams during the early 1990s. “I don’t remember which throw it was, but the 154-footer sure felt good.”
