Jumping out to an early 20-0 lead last Friday night (September 27), the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars were able to hold off a late rally from the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes and claim an exciting 36-34 victory in a 9-man high school football game at Granada.
G-H-EC/T (1-4) snapped a 20-game losing streak with Friday’s victory, while HL-O/F is now 2-3 this season.
“It was a tough night and a heartbreaking loss for us,” Coyotes co-head coach Jonathon Curry said. “We were down 20-0 and came back to tie it at 28-28, and later had another chance to tie it at the end. It was a tough way to lose, but it was a great comeback and effort from the boys.”
The Jaguars struck early with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Carter Spear’s 43-yard touchdown burst (plus the two-point conversion) and Owen Wolter’s two-yard touchdown run gave G-H-EC/T a quick 14-0 lead.
After another Jaguars’ touchdown run made it 20-0, the Coyotes got on the board late in the second quarter when Eli Fest connected with Tyler Madison for a 21-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, as the score was 20-6 at halftime.
