A fine first year of the spring sports pairing arrangement between Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda featured four boys scoring over 100 points during the high school track and field season.
Leading the Coyotes in scoring throughout the spring of 2018 was junior all-around performer Gabe Spittle, who finished the season with a total of 180 points. Spittle scored in the pole vault in nearly every meet and often placed in the 110-meter high hurdles, the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. At the end of the season, Gabe was the anchor runner on HLOF’s 4 x 100-meter relay team.
Senior Matthias Kunerth was the team’s second-leading point producer, racking up 161 points by scoring as a distance runner (1,600 and 800), high jumper, triple jumper and relay runner. The versatile all-around athlete ran consistent leadoff legs on the Coyotes 4 x 800-meter team, which placed among the leaders in most meets.
Freshman Zach Thier scored 120.5 points this spring, getting most of them in the shot put and discus events. Thier was the Red Rock Conference champion in the discus, uncorking a throw of 123 feet even. Zach also ran a leg on the team’s 4 x 100-meter relay.
