Coyote varsity girls play strong first half against Saints Saturday
In an exciting high school varsity girls’ basketball game which was much closer than the final score indicates, the Coyotes of Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda played competitively Saturday afternoon (December 15) against the visiting Big South Conference Saint James Saints.
The non-conference clash was played at the Fulda High School gymnasium and the score was close throughout the first half (tied at 20-20) before the Saints took a slim 27-22 lead into intermission. St. James gradually pulled away in the second half and claimed a 67-47 victory, improving to 2-3 on the young season.
The Coyotes, who played a very close game against Adrian (at Adrian) the previous night, dropped to 0-8 in their first year as a paired program.
HL-O / Fulda’s girls certainly battled well most of the game Saturday, receiving a stellar all-around performance from senior leader McKenzie Evers (14 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal) who scored 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers, in the second half.

Adrian wins close game over HL-O / Fulda varsity girls, 42-35
In a Red Rock Conference high school varsity girls’ basketball game which was close all the way, the Adrian Dragons prevailed Friday evening (December 14) with a 42-35 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda on the Dragons’ home court in Adrian.
It was the fourth close victory of the season for the Dragons (now 4-2 after a 72-43 loss to Windom Monday night). Adrian has edged Edgerton (51-47), Ellsworth (48-44), Westbrook-Walnut Grove (45-42) and HLOF (42-35) to fashion a perfect 4-0 record in the Red Rock Conference. The Dragons are 4-2 overall, having also lost to Big South Conference opponent Luverne (57-25) on December 4.
Against the Coyotes, Adrian held a slim four-point lead (25-21) at intermission and was able to stay ahead throughout a closely-contested second half.
Senior forward McKenzie Evers played a fine all-around game for HLOF as she tallied 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Arrows pierce Coyotes, 70-18, in one-sided contest at Fulda
Pipestone Area, a perennial girls’ basketball power, came to Fulda last Tuesday evening (December 11) and displayed its athleticism and skills as the Arrows effectively pierced the Coyotes of Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda in a one-sided contest by a final score of 70-18.
It was the Coyotes’ first game of the season on the Fulda floor after playing a pair of games at Okabena and three consecutive away games (at Slayton, at Mountain Lake and at Westbrook).
The Arrows improved to 2-2 with the victory. They are now 4-2 with wins over both Windom (64-51) and Wabasso (61-51) since playing the Coyotes, who became 0-6 after last Tuesday’s loss.
