Harberts opens X-treme Tae Kwon Do gym

“The real question is what are not benefits of Tae Kwon Do,” responded instructor Lee Harberts when asked about the benefits of the sport. “Coordination, enhancing reflexes, concentration, building respect, goal setting, discipline, physical fitness, self-confidence and it’s a martial art.”

Harberts, who began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons when he was 12, is opening a gym in Round Lake and will be offering classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning September 3. Classes will be held in the Greater Round Lake Community Center (former high school building), and are open to “anyone age 6-106,” he added. There are opportunities for four- and five-year olds as well, if there is enough interest.

As Harberts stressed the many benefits of TKD, he pointed out that the sport builds respect for everyone. “TKD students are the ones who will hold the door open or move out of the way in a store aisle,” Harberts added. “We hold students accountable, wherever they are, and want the best from our students, and we know that they’re capable of it.”

X-treme Tae Kwon Do is the name Harberts has chosen for his business, which he began when the previous TKD instructor (Champion Tae Kwon Do) in Worthington was leaving. “It was a choice to close the business or keep the gym alive, and provide opportunities for the kids,” Harberts said. “This is the only martial art that is available to the public in the area.”
