Trailing 25-22 at halftime, the Cedar Mountain Cougars outscored the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes 31-23 in the second half and captured a 53-48 victory in a non-conference high school girls’ basketball game last Thursday night (December 19) in Okabena.
Nine players scored for the Coyotes, who are now 1-7 overall. HL-O/F is currently 1-3 in the Red Rock Conference.
The Coyotes played Adrian/Ellsworth at Ellsworth Friday (December 20). Look for details of that game in next week’s edition.
“We played well against Cedar Mountain,” Coyotes head coach Andy Oakland said. “We got off to a nice start and led for much of the first half. It was nice for our team to get out early and set the tone, instead of playing from behind right away.”
Chrissy Hermeling led the Coyotes with 13 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Emily Madison had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as she was 7-for-9 from the free-throw line.
“We got to the free-throw line well as a team, but we also got ourselves into some foul trouble as the game went along,” Oakland said. “Cedar Mountain kept going hard to the basket and we couldn’t contain them for a long stretch in the second half. But we stayed competitive and were in the game until the very end.”
