Scoring early and often, the undefeated Mountain Lake Area Wolverines — Minnesota’s third-ranked Nine-Man high school football squad, according to the  complicated QRF formula — defeated Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda at Mountain Lake’s Munson Field last Wednesday evening (October 17) by a final score of 63-14.

The Wolverines scored in the game’s first 30 seconds, scooping up a Coyote fumble near the goal line (at the six-yard line) and claimed a quick 7-0 lead.

Two more MLA touchdowns stretched the lead to 21-0 before HL-O / F rallied with a scoring drive of its own. Highlighting the march was a 30-yard pass completion on the halfback option from Tyler Madison to Levi Spittle. Quarterback Eli Fest capped the series with an extra-effort burst on a seven-yard run for the touchdown.

The Wolverines (8-0) dominated the second quarter, putting 28 points on the board (MLA place kicker David Larson was a perfect nine-of-nine for the game on extra points) and took a 49-6 lead into intermission.

Two more touchdowns by the Wolverines in the third quarter stretched their advantage to 63-6.
