Stellar individual performances by senior Cheyenne Schaffer in the high jump and freshman Morgan Gehl in the 1,600-meter run, along with a first-place finish by the Coyote 4×800-meter relay, highlighted the debut of the newly-paired Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda High School girls’ track and field program last Tuesday, March 27.
Competing in a four-team meet at an indoor facility at Redwood Valley High School in Redwood Falls, the Coyotes racked up a total of 58 points in the season-opener, which was scored 8-6-4-3-2-1 for the top six finishes in individual events and 8-6-4-2 for the first four relays.
Schaffer started things off for HL-O / Fulda with a first-place effort in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-10, giving the Coyotes a quick eight points.
Gehl, who earlier placed sixth in the high jump (4-4) and ran a strong anchor leg on the winning 4×800 relay (2:38), cruised to victory in the 1,600 (mile) with a fine early-season time of 5:41.24, pulling away from Canby / Minneota’s Grace Drietz (5:47.76) on the final lap.
