Junior Gabe Spittle placed second in the pole vault (9-6) and freshman Gabe Villarreal placed second in the shot put (39-1) as the two Gabes notched the boys’ best individual performances for the recently-paired Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda High School track and field program in its inaugural meet at Redwood Falls last Tuesday, March 27.

Competing along with host Redwood Valley, Yellow Medicine East and the combination of Canby and Minneota, the Coyotes also received a fine second-place finish by junior twin brothers Christian and Carlos Juarez, freshman Eli Fest and senior leader Matthias Kunerth in the 4×800-meter relay, which ran the 16-lap event in nine minutes and 52.3 seconds.

The indoor track at the Redwood Falls Community Center is 200 meters long. The meet was scored 8-6-4-3-2-1 for six places in individual events and 8-6-4-2 for the top four relays.

Freshman Zach Thier earned four points for the Coyotes with a third-place performance in the shot put (36-8), giving HL-O / F a total of 10 points in that event.

The Coyotes also scored well in the 400-meter dash, picking up seven points on a third place finish by senior Leighton Gehl (1:01.1) and a fourth by Fest (1:02.19).
