HLO/Fulda Coyote freshmen girls tie for third-place in Red Rock Conference Tournament

A game-tying buzzer-beating three-pointer by Chrissy Hermeling sent Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda’s freshmen girls’ basketball game against Adrian into overtime last Saturday, February 2.

After a scoreless extra period, the two teams tangled in a second overtime. The host Dragons scored first, but a layup by HLOF’s Faith White tied the score at 25-25 and that’s how the exciting contest finished as the Coyotes and Dragons tied for third-place in the 11-team Red Rock Conference Freshmen Tournament.

HLOF was seeded fourth in the tournament and lost a 41-27 decision to top-seeded Southwest Minnesota Christian earlier in the day, playing in the semifinal round. The Coyotes had advanced to the semifinals with an impressive 43-34 victory over Edgerton at Okabena back on January 7.

In Saturday’s game against SW Christian, the Coyotes made just three-of-10 free throws and trailed by 14 points (28-14) at halftime. But, a strong second-half surge brought HLOF to within five points (32-27) before the Eagles pulled away to the final 14-point win.

Six girls scored in the game for the Coyotes who were led by White and Emily Madison with seven and six points, respectively.

Hermeling, Skylar Fisher and Taylor Haberman each scored four points against the Eagles, while Addison Fisher contributed a two-point field goal to the Coyotes total.
