In memory of Doug Byers

1933-DOUG BYERS-2018

Doug Byers was born on May 28, 1933 in Slayton, Minnesota to Guy and Florence Swan Byers. He grew up in Slayton and attended school, graduating from the Slayton High School. Doug was united in marriage to Sylvia Bartholomaus on January 9, 1953 at the Iona Presbyterian Church in Iona, MN. Doug enlisted in the United States Army on April 22, 1953.  Following his discharge on April 13, 1955 Doug returned to his wife, Sylvia and they made their home in Slayton, MN until 1962 when they moved to St. Paul, MN. In 1971 they moved to Westbrook, MN where they owned and operated Westbrook LP Gas Company. They retired in 1986 and spent several winters in Texas. Sylvia passed away in December 5, 2004. Doug married Dorothy Sellman Wynia on June 4, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Slayton.  Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton.  Doug passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 85. He was a member of the Slayton United Methodist Church. Doug served on the Murray County Hospital Board was a member of the Westbrook Kiwanis, the Westbrook VFW Post, Westbrook American Legion Post and the Slayton American Legion Post.  He enjoyed visiting with friend, golfing, playing cards and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Byers of Slayton, MN; four children, Steve Byers of Willmar, MN, Sheryl and Kevin Myers of Young America, MN, Sheila and Jon Knudson of Rosemount, MN and Shelly and Dennis Gieselman of Worthington, MN, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sibling and their spouses, Carole and Marion Schmitz of Eugene, OR, and Larry and Gail Byers of Slayton, MN and several nieces and nephews and their families He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Sylvia, infant grandson, Derek Byers and niece, Lisa Belloni.

Funeral Services at United Methodist Church Slayton, MN, on Saturday, November 3, at 10:30 AM with Ethanie Schmidt officiating.  The organist is Janet Voges with special music Bruce Dysthe. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN.  Military honors accorded by the Westbrook American Legion Post the Westbrook VFW Post, and the Slayton American Legion Post.
