Iona “Onie” Mae Oakland, the daughter of William and Nora (Fairley) Mitchell, was born on March 22, 1926 in Canton, SD. She grew up in Canton and attended school graduating from the Canton High School in 1944. Onie was united in marriage to Andrew Oakland on May 1, 1948 in Luverne, MN. After their marriage they lived in Brewster and then on a farm near Fulda, MN. They retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Fulda. Onie remained at home after Andy passed away in February of 2008. Iona passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at her home at the age of 91. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fulda and was active with the Presbyterian Women, Sunshine Group and Meals on Wheels. Onie enjoyed golfing, gardening, baking, her flower garden, bird watching and spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.
Survivors include her 6 children, Drew (Jeanne Koopman) Oakland of Fulda, MN, Phyllis Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, Craig (Peggy) Oakland of Hudson, WI, Janet (Bruce Fuerstenberg) Speckmier of Fulda, MN, Steven (Rose) Oakland of Fulda, MN and Kari (Justin) Smith of Slayton, MN; 15 grandchildren, Robyn, Brent, Kimberly, Christopher, Nicole, Ryan, Adam, Andrea, Joshua, Erin, Abby, Andrew, Michael, Justin and Jessica; 17 great-grandchildren, Landon, Courtney, Rylan, Evany, Quinn, Ryan, Sienna, Jaeger, Adrian, Sage, Nico, Elin, Addison, Sophia, Evelyn, James and Brynnly; sister-in-law, Dorothy Oakland of Canton, SD; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, Mary Oakland, 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral Services First Presbyterian Church Fulda, MN at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. The organist is Norma Meyeraan. The soloist is Lloyd Winter. The pallbearers are her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN.
