John Marvin Anderson passed away at the age of 93 on March 25, 2019, in Albertville, Minn. A graveside memorial service, officiated by John’s nephew, Ben Anderson, will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m. at Slayton Memory Gardens, southeast of Slayton, Minn. A visitation will follow at 2645 Broadway Avenue in downtown Slayton, inside the historic Silverberg’s Building.
John was born May 29, 1925, on the family farm in Des Moines River Township, Murray County, Minn., to George W. and Elfreda (Anderson) Anderson. He attended rural school near Westbrook, Minn. He farmed near Westbrook and Slayton. He later worked for Lee Motor Sales, the Massey Ferguson farm equipment dealer in Slayton, with his brothers Leland, Max and Kenneth. He remodeled a few homes and apartment buildings in Slayton. He also sold water distillers all over Southwest Minnesota to help improve the health of local residents.
John enjoyed many hobbies during his life, including flying an airplane, boating, bowling, traveling in his motor home and playing cards. Later in life, his biggest passion was golf and he enjoyed it to the fullest during the summers in Minnesota and the winters in Arizona. He made more than 20 hole in ones and continued to golf until age 91!
John’s snowbird days came to an end when he sold his home in Arizona in 2016. Later, he also sold his home in Slayton and moved into Sunrise Terrace Senior Living Community in Slayton. After suffering numerous health issues, he moved to be near his nephew, Philip Anderson, where he passed away at Guardian Angels Assisted Living.
John is survived by one brother, George W. Anderson Jr. of Casa Grande, Ariz.; one sister, Clarine Schaeffer of Luverne, Minn.; eight nieces and nephews: Veronica Pearson, Virginia (Richard) Hepworth, Philip (Connie) Anderson, George (Patsy) Anderson, Gary (Maria) Anderson, Rory (Pam) Anderson, Paula Schaeffer and Michael Anderson; 17 great-nieces and nephews; and 31 great-great-nieces and nephews.
