Streambank erosion is a major contributor to water clarity problems in the watershed. The Heron Lake Watershed District (HLWD) works with landowners to install projects that help stabilize streambanks to reduce the amount of sediment entering the water. Financial assistance for these projects is often sought through grant funding. Attaining grant funds is becoming more difficult as competition has steadily increased and often takes multiple attempts before funding is achieved.
In 2012, the HLWD was awarded a grant provided by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency through the United States Environmental Protection Agency Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Fund. Through this grant, the HLWD sought to increase landowner awareness of J-hook weirs, unique streambank stabilization structures, through the installation of one site on Jack Creek and two sites on Okabena Creek.
