Jerry’s Jottings

This week, August 13-19, is Minnesota Newspaper Week. The state-wide whiteout of news on the front page of more than 200 newspapers. It is also the 150th anniversary of the Minnesota Newspaper Association. We join 25 daily and 295 non-daily newspapers in the state of Minnesota with a whiteout that reminds Minnesotans of the importance of a free press. We are proud to be part of the weekly routine of over 2.2 million families that turn to their newspaper for information of their communities. As Governor Mark Dayton said, “Freedom of the Press promotes a well-informed constituency, improves public policy, increases responsiveness and accountability, and enhances public confidence in governmental institutions. For the last forty-five years we have been a member of the Minnesota Newspaper Association and no doubt the previous publishers had done likewise.

Our need for moisture has been met in a very timely manner. It appears that we will be mowing our lawns the entire summer with no break and that will keep us all happy.

We had the opportunity to attend our granddaughters White Coat Ceremony at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine at Iowa City last Friday. The class of 2021 will have some fine doctors.
