Joy in the Journey 1-16-2019

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is an organization that I have supported for most of my adult life.  The stories that are shared in the magazines and letters that I receive are so very heartbreaking, and I am glad to give a donation that will be used to provide grief counseling to the victims and their families.  Our support also helps with the “don’t drink and drive” messages through different campaigns such as MADD’s Designated Driver campaigns.

Right now this organization is especially focusing on child endangerment.  Over half of all children in drunk driving crashes are killed while riding with a drunk driver.  It is gut-wrenching to think of the sadness and loss that it brings to families.  Children should never be put in danger, and no child should be the victim of a drunk driver, especially if the driver is someone who has been entrusted to keep them safe.

I would like to share some signs of intoxication among motorists.  You can help protect yourself and your family by looking for these warning signs.  Be vigilant and alert to help keep drivers off the road that are impaired and a danger to others.

   1. Quick acceleration or deceleration

   2. Tailgating

   3. Weaving or zig-zagging

   4. Driving anywhere other than on a road designated for vehicles

   5. Almost striking an object, curb, or vehicle

   6. Stopping without cause or erratic braking

   7. Drifting in and out of traffic lanes

   8. Signaling that is inconsistent with driving actions

   9. Slow response to traffic signals ( or maybe a sudden stop or delayed start)

  10. Straddling the center marker

  11. Driving with the headlights off at night

  12. Swerving

  13. Driving slower than 10 miles below the speed limit

  14. Turning abruptly or illegally

  15. Driving into opposing traffic on the wrong side of the road
