Cell phones! How in the world did they become the center of our existence?? It is crazy, isn’t it? It is like we cannot go anywhere without noticing if we have our cell phone “attached to our hip”!
I remember when I purchased my first one. It was when I was still teaching full time, and I wanted one for safety sake when I drove on snowy and ice covered roads to and from work. My husband, Dan, doesn’t relish phones of any type, so he was resistant when I told him he had to get one too, so I could get ahold of him in case of an emergency. For a long time, he only had me in his contacts. He didn’t want to be bothered with calls from anyone else when he was out working, etc. Eventually his kids became part of his “cell phone world”, and now he has several contacts and uses his phone daily. But he doesn’t text…and doesn’t have any desire to.
Texting…Email…Facebook…and all the rest of the things available now on phones…that really is the problem, isn’t it? The real reason we have become so bonded with these contraptions. We have let them have such rule over our time and lives. We are so afraid that someone is trying to tell us something that we just won’t survive without, if we just put the device on silence while we are with family and friends. That somehow the world won’t keep working without us knowing or seeing everything posted for us and the world to see.
Sadness comes over me when I see couples, teenaged friends, and even whole families out for a meal or a good time together, but interrupting their conversations….or even preventing any dialogue at all…is their cell phone! Fingers are flying over the letters to send messages to people not in their midst. All the while those they love and care a lot about are just “there”, but really not in their thoughts at the moment. It is intentional when we leave the phone in the car or silence it to give us some real quality time when we are in the presence of those we need to have time with.
And then…I came across this article that grabbed my attention. I actually had seen it before, but this time something connected with my inner being. Because I believe in taking time to read God’s word, and strengthening my faith in Christ, it was important to me to consider these words of wisdom. I don’t know the author, but maybe you need this wake-up nudge too?!
Attn: Cell Phone Owners
Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?
* What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
* What if we flipped through it several times a day?
* What if we turned back to get it if we forgot it?
* What if we used it to get messages from the text?
* What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
* What if we gave it to kids as gifts?
* What if we used it when we traveled?
* What if we used it in case of emergency?
Hmmm…Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because……..Jesus already paid the bill.
Makes us stop and think, where are our priorities?
