Knights defeat Raiders in football action at Tyler

Playing short-handed at Tyler Friday night (October 6) on a wet field, the Raiders were defeated by a diversified Russell-Tyler-Ruthton squad, 54-6.

Fulda played without two-way starters Levi Spittle and Zach Thier.

Spittle, a junior, has been the Raiders dual-threat quarterback on offense and has led the team in tackles in most games as a defensive linebacker. Levi sprained an ankle late in the game against Hills-Beaver Creek and did not suit up for the Raiders at Tyler.

Thier, a versatile freshman who has played as a tight end and in the backfield on offense, while also playing multiple positions on defense, was in California for his brother’s (Austin Thier) graduation from Marine Corps boot camp.

Both Spittle and Thier are expected to be in action this week for the Raiders, but their absence on the field was a factor at Tyler in the loss to a very good R-T-R squad.

“R-T-R got out ahead of us early and really never let us back in the game,” summed up FHS head football coach Jonathon Curry. “We did some good things, especially running the ball, but were not able to sustain drives enough to cut into their lead.”

The Knights (4-2) racked up a whopping total of 433 yards on the ground against Fulda’s defense, scoring all eight of their touchdowns on running plays.

Fulda, meanwhile, rushed for 186 yards on 37 carries and sophomore quarterback Tyler Madison completed three passes (in seven attempts) for 39 yards.
