Surging with a pair of 25-0 runs — one in each half — the visiting Lakeview Lakers claimed a dominating 94-22 victory over Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda in varsity girls’ basketball action at Okabena last Saturday, November 24.
It was the season-opener for both squads and was the first game ever for the new HL-O and Fulda pairing arrangement, known as the Coyotes.
Lakeview, which is based on Cottonwood and also includes Wood Lake and numerous open-enrollment students from nearby Marshall, effectively moved the ball and ran the floor throughout Saturday’s contest, scoring often in transition off of Coyote turnovers.
After the Lakers scored a layup off the opening tip, the Coyotes countered and tied the score at 2-2 on a nifty mid-range jumper by junior forward Kailee Haberman — the first two varsity points for the HL-O / Fulda program.
Plagued by missed shots and turnovers, the Coyotes did not score another basket until nearly 10 minutes later when Haberman connected again on a mid-range jump shot with 7:26 to play in the first half.
