Letter to the Editor from Leon Carney

People of Murray County,

The rampant carelessness of Murray County is a problem. Extortion on behalf of Murray County is disgusting. My mother and I have been extorted for 27 years of thousands of dollars. Murray County has been collecting taxes on our RIM protected wetland. These lands are exempt from taxation under Minnesota Statute. Minnesota Law means nothing to Murray County Commissioners. Whenever my mother or I tried to explain it to them our commissioner just sneered and treated us like dirt. I finally filed my complaint with Minnesota tax Court. After a three year wait I was finally scheduled. At the pretrial hearing Murray County Attorney, Travis Smith, to his credit had examined the statute and agreed that the property is exempt and the three years of taxes paid would be refunded and taxes will not be collected on that property in the future.

Our commissioner went to all my upstream neighbors and circulated a petition to the metro district court making me out as the neighborhood villain. Never again will be the neighbors we once were. Three years ago on Mothers’ Day a mysterious fire burned goats and all the buildings on the property. This type of lawlessness, bullying and intimidation on behalf of Murray County Commissioners is in bad taste and can cause emotional responses.

I have reported this to Murray County Law Enforcement because I am certain this continued lawless extortion racket continues against other RIM owners.

Whoever becomes sheriff of Murray County, I would hope not be calmly dismissive of this lawless conduct of Murray County Commissioners. If the sheriff gets emotional investigating those type of abuses and uses barn yard language  explaining it to staff, I excuse him but support him. If on the other hand he calmly and submissively buries the investigation, he earns my total contempt.
