Tuesday, Valentine’s Day, was a special day at Fulda Senior Dining. Not only was it a $2.00 meal day, it was also the observation of the tenth anniversary of Lutheran Social Service being the provider of the Nutrition Program.
Rhonda Lorang, Lutheran Social Services, was present to talk with those who were attending the Fulda Meal Site on Tuesday. She gave a bit of background about the Nutrition Program, stating that it has been in existance for over 40 years. “In Region 8, Western Community Action was the provider of the Nutrition Program. In 1974, the first three sites to open were Marshall, Redwood Falls and Worthington. Over the next several years, Region 8 had 40 sites total. This included Home Delivered sites and Diners’ Clubs.”
Lorang said that in 2004, Western Community Action was no longer the provider for the Nutrition Program as Nutrition Service Inc., Waseca, MN, took it over for three years.
Then in the fall of 2006, Lutheran Social Service was awarded the bid for Region 6E, 8 and 9. “As of January 1st, 2007, LSS received 22 counties, bringing the total number to 39 counties in Minnesota that LSS provides the Nutrition Program to,” Lorang said.
