Lunds attend Garo Baptist Church sesquicentennial

Bryan and Linda Lund returned to the United States on February 16th, following a trip to Turo, India. “We had planned to go to Garo Hills because Linda still has childhood friends there, and then we learned about the dedication of the monument to the American Baptist missionaries who had served the people of Garo. Linda’s mom and dad, James and Doris Wood, were  two of those missionaries. Linda and her brothers, Paul and Bill, were born there,” Bryan explained.

With the Garo Baptist Church Sesquicentenary scheduled for February 8- 11, Bryan and Linda left Minneapolis on Wednesday, February 7th, flying to Toronto, then to Delhi, and on to Guwahati to attend an annual church conference held in Rajasimla, a village of 1,000 people.

“American Baptist missionaries came to minister in the Garo Hills because the Garo people were head hunters. The British were going to go in and wipe the Garo people out, but missionaries intervened by saying, ‘Let us try to do with the gospel what you have not been able to do with a sword.’” Linda said, sharing the story of the beginnings of ministering to the Garo people. “One pastor stated in his sermon during the celebration that ‘the Garo tribesmen were dirty, stinky savages, but thankfully, the missionaries came.”
