Putting 10 players in the scoring column in a game against MACCRAY at Wabasso last Friday afternoon (November 29), the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda B-Squad boys basketball team scored 44 points in its season-opener.
MACCRAY, which represents the communities of Maynard, Clara City and Raymond, along Highway 23 between Granite Falls and Willmar, countered with 63 points of its own and defeated the Coyotes by a final score of 63-44. The Wolverines pulled away with a strong surge late in the first half and took a 38-17 lead into intermission.
The game was part of the Wabasso Tipoff Classic, which also featured varsity action on Friday before being canceled on Saturday due to bad weather conditions.
Sophomore guard Parker Murphy topped HLOF’s balanced B-Squad scoring attack with nine points as he connected three times from long range. Sophomores Jaeden Stranberg (eight) and Tyson Cotter (seven) combined for 15 more points, while seven other Coyotes also scored in the fast-paced game.
HLOF made just three-of-12 free throws in the contest, but outscored the Wolverines by one point, 27-26, in the second half.
The Coyotes will play at Westbrook Thursday night (December 5) and will host Murray County Central at Fulda next Tuesday evening, December 10.
