A huge third-inning RBI triple by junior catcher and clean-up hitter Cheyliska Schaffer highlighted action for the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes in a non-conference fast-pitch softball game against Martin County West at Welcome last Thursday, May 16.
Schaffer’s blast scored seventh-grader Hannah Kazemba, who had drawn a walk to lead off the inning. Schaffer’s courtesy runner — sophomore Alexa Dierks — scored on the next at bat, driven home by freshman first baseman’s Taylor Haberman’s RBI single.
It was Haberman’s second run-scoring single of the game as she had delivered an RBI base hit to plate freshman third baseman Emily Madison with the bases loaded in the top of the first. Madison had started the frame by coaxing a one-out walk. Senior center fielder Cassidy Hennings followed with a single and Schaffer drew a walk loading the bases for Haberman, who came through with a timely hit, giving the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
“We got off to a nice start, scoring the first run,” declared HL-O / Fulda head softball coach Janae Kazemba. “But as the game progressed, MCW scored a lot of runs and ended the game early (after four innings) with the 15-run rule.”
