A stellar first-place performance by freshman distance ace Morgan Gehl highlighted Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda’s results in the season’s first outdoor high school track and field meet of the season Monday, April 23.
Competing under nearly ideal weather conditions at Pipestone’s Paulson Field with sunshine, little wind and the temperature hovering near 60 degrees, the newly-formed Coyotes scored 43 points in the 11-team meet, which was scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the top eight places in all 18 events.
Gehl contributed 17 of those points for HL-O / Fulda as she impressively won the 3,200-meter run (10 points) with an excellent early-season time of 11:34.59, finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (five points), clocked at 1:07.24 and anchored the Coyotes’ second-place (eight points divided by four) 4 x 800-meter relay team, which ran the distance in 9:35.90.
“As we expected, Morgan had a great day for us on the track,” declared HL-O / Fulda head girls’ track and field coach Gary Hildebrandt. “She ran a strong anchor on our 4×8, ran a very good quarter and finished her day with an awesome run to win the two mile by a long ways.”
