A pair of convincing victories on the track by freshman distance-ace Morgan Gehl highlighted Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda’s girls’ performances in the 66th annual Trojan Relays in Worthington last Tuesday, May 15.
Competing in the smaller-school or Class A Division of the huge two-class high school track and field meet, Gehl breezed to first-place finishes in both the 1,600-meter (5:15.64) and 3,200-meter (11:18.16) runs in record-setting fashions.
Those 20 points by Gehl, along with four other individual medalist-performances (top four) and a pair of third-place relay finishes, sparked the Coyotes to fourth place in the team standings with 86 points.
The Eagles of the Southwest Minnesota Christian / Edgerton won the team title by racking up 169 points. Hills-Beaver Creek was a solid second with its score of 120, followed in the eight-team field by Murray County Central (98), HL-O / Fulda (86), Worthington’s JV squad (58), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (57.5), Westbrook-Walnut Grove / Red Rock Central (54.5) and Adrian (43).
Senior veteran Cheyenne Schaffer contributed 14 individual points by placing second in the high jump (4-8) and finishing third in the 800-meter run (2:38.64). She also ran the anchor leg on HLOF’s third-place 4 x 800-meter relay (10:48.45) and ran the leadoff leg on the Coyotes’ 4 x 400 relay, which also finished third (season-best time of 4:32.73).
