Once again running a pair of stellar long-distance races, Fulda freshman Morgan Gehl won both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs at last Thursday’s (May 31) Section 3A high school track and field meet held at Thunder Hawk Stadium in Montevideo.
Gehl was contested by Canby / Minneota eighth-grader Grace Drietz in the 1,600 and Luverne eighth-grader Tenley Nelson stayed close to Morgan during the first five laps of the 3,200.
But in each race, the smooth-running Coyote — representing the first-year pairing of Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda — pulled away and earned herself a couple of gold medals and state-meet qualification in both events.
Gehl’s winning times at Montevideo were 5:17.77 in the 1,600 and 11:21.80 in the 3,200.
Drietz finished a close second in the 1,600 with her time of 5:20.40, while the third-place time was 27 seconds behind, crossing in 5:47.59.
Nelson, who has developed into one of the finest distance runners in the state, was unable to keep pace with Gehl over the final three laps of the two mile and clocked a second-place time of 11:42.24. The third-place runner crossed the finish line more than 43 seconds later with a time of 12:25.98.
