The Murray County Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, June 25th. Amongst the items on the agenda was the approval of land sale to the Department of Natural Resources. Bill Schuna, Area Wildlife Manager Slayton/Talcot Lake WMA presented information to the board in regards to the sale of the land. The first piece is located in the Leeds Township northeast quarter and part of the southeast quarter section 9 in township 106 north, range 42 west of Murray County owned by James and Char Larson. The 126.74 acre tract consists of cropland prone to flooding along Beaver Creek and a woody cover planting. According to NRCS soil maps, poorly drained soils encompass 73.2 acres (58%) of this parcel.
The section of wildlife is very excited about this parcel. It is connected on the north and east sides to Tract 1 of Peters WMA, a 73.2 acre parcel purchased by the State of Minnesota in 1954. Peters WMA contains one of the most diverse wet prairies remaining in Murray County. Tract 2 contains three restorable wetlands encompassing approximately 36 acres. The largest of the three is approximately 34 acres in size and has been subject to flooding. Once restored these basins will help alleviate flooding along Beaver Creek.
