The Murray County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, June 25. The ditch bills were approved with one in question that of County Ditch 11. Commissioner David Thiner expressed that the payment should be delayed until the work is finalized and the issue is settled with the state. The board approved 4-1 to pay the bill from the local contractor for the emergency work.
Chairman Glenn Kluis read a letter from Red Rock Rural Water stating a new well will be drilled in Section 20 Des Moines River Township.
The summer conference of Minnesota Agriculture Inspectors was held in Owatonna on July 17-19. Jon Bloemendaal, Murray County, attended and gave an update of the conference. The first speaker told of the pollinator program and the absence of bees and the necessity of more bee colonies in the state. Another speaker spoke of the legislative funding received for weed control especially of Palmer amaranth a fast growing weed native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It has a fast growth rated of two to three inches per day and commonly reaches heights of six to eight feet. Yield losses have been up to 91 percent in corn and 79 percent in soybeans according to the information. Jon continued a valiant effort is being made to keep this weed out of Minnesota. More information concerning noxious invasive weeds is available in the environmental office. The conference attendees toured a GMO resistant plant, an Ethanol plant and a hops growing farm. Another session was on safety precautions during inspections.
