One of the topics topping Tuesday’s commissioner meeting was the proposed animal pound and kennel presented by Steve Erickson. Josh Malchow, administrator for the City of Slayton, Paul Kenney, City of Fulda chief of police, along with Brian Christensen, Slayton Police Chief, shared information regarding the proposal.

Past practice had the stray dogs and cats gathered by local authorities being taken to the Slayton Vet Clinic where their owner could claim them. Slayton Vet Clinic informed the authorities late last summer on their intention to discontinue this practice.

Steve Erickson brought forward the proposal of 4 Paws  Pet Grooming creating a kennel/pound to board stray animals, primarily stray dogs and cats. He is planning on building out his current structure on Broadway to house the stray animals. He is in the process of obtaining a conditional use permit from the State to operate the facility in the current zoning district and will also be obtaining a license through the board of animal health.

The proposal is $7,000 per year or $583.33 per month for 2018 and 2019. This amount includes up to 280 boarding nights for animals. Anything over 280 boarding nights would be billed at the agreed rates. Daily rate is $25.00 per day. The Pound agrees to charge an animal recovery fee to the owner of the animal at an amount of $25.00 per day and thus would not be billed to the city or county.
