Murray County Commissioners declare state of emergency

The Murray County Commissioners met in special seassion on Thursday to declare a State of Emergency due to flooding. The Commissioners met with Emergency Management Director Heath Landsman to discuss flooding issues throughout Murray County.

Murray County has experience widespread flooding resulting rain ranging from 4 to 8 inches over the past week.  The heavy rains have impacted various public infrastructures throughout the county which lead to the county issuing this State of Emergency.

Emergency Management Director Heath Landsman will continue to work with the various city and township officials over the next few days to monitor the flooding.

This proclamation was prior to the deluge of rain that fell on Slayton, Lake Shetek, and Currie areas on Sunday evening. Some areas reporting 3-4 inches of rain had fallen in an hour’s time frame creating water over many roads. Sheriff Telkamp of  the Murray County created a facebook post advising travelers of the road conditions. He described the siutation as having water over the road on Highway 59 south of Highway 30 1/2 mile near Pete’s Corner. Highway 30 west of Hadley was on the list as was County Road 35 west of Currie with water and debris reported on the road. In face this road was closed. It was reported that 146th Street road and 170th Avenue was washed out. Highway 267 and County Road 7 near the airport was under water as was County Road 38. The sheriff reminded residents to report all road closing as soon as possible for safety reasons for emergency response crews to know where roads were impassable.
