MURRAY COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE CO-CHAIR David Herrig

I am very proud to have been selected as one of the co-chairs for Relay for Life. Hopefully my story will help everyone realize how important it is to keep working to find a way to defeat this rotten illness.

My walk with cancer is a little different than most. It began in December of 2017. I went to my yearly check up and to my surprise my doctor decided they should do a biopsy. Then three days before Christmas I received a call saying that the test came up positive for prostate cancer. Wow! That was a very rotten Christmas gift.

We went to more doctor visits and decided that radiation was the best option for the treatment. The plan was to start 39 treatments the first of April. My doctors said don’t worry, prostate cancer is the easiest cancer to treat. Sure if it’s not yours. Needless to say I was scared half to death.

Then on February 20th we received a call that changed everything. The call was from my daughter Meg, “Could you guys come right away the baby is very sick”. We raced to Brewster to watch the other five kids. Meg called and said that they were going to Sioux Falls by ambulance and would call later. Then the call came, Jeff had leukemia.
