The twenty-third annual Murray County Relay for Life event netted nearly $69,000. The night began with survivors attending a supper served in the 4-H hall.

Purple is the survivor color. Those organizing the event appreciated those who helped paint Murray County purple in honor of all cancer survivors. Co-chairs Janet Voges and Linda Tobias said, “We were honored to work with three awesome cancer survivors as honorary chairs. When we see all the purple T-shirts our survivors wear, we need to realize that the Relay for Life is making a difference. That being said, we all have also been touched by loss in our community this year also. It is these losses that inspire us as co-chairs to continue the fight to find that final cure.”

Joe Brossard of Chandler was first diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in April of 1999. The doctors removed a tumor in his lower abdomen about the size of a grapefruit. Fortunately for Brossard the soft tissue sarcoma was a slow growing kind of cancer. Surgery in November of 2012 was a 8-hour event with the tumor being removed. Brossard recovered and went back to work. Checkups continued every 6-12 months. In the summer of 2015, the cancer showed up again the same area of the lower abdomen and another surgery was performed in October 2015. Once again the cancer was removed. His last exam this past March showed another nodule growing in the left side of his abdomen. He is scheduled for another follow up CT scan the end of August to determine the next course of action.
