New track and field season is underway for Coyotes in first year of spring pairing

Joined together for the first time as the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes, the paired track and field program began a new tradition yesterday (Tuesday, March 27) when nearly 50 squad members traveled north to Redwood Falls to compete in a four-team indoor meet, hosted by Redwood Valley High School.

Practices began for the combined HL-O / Fulda track and field athletes at Fulda more than two weeks ago on Monday, March 12. With an abundance of snow still on the ground, much of the early-season practicing has been indoors. Last weekend’s large snowfall has made that even more true and Coyote coaches Brad Holinka and Gary Hildebrandt are glad for the chance to compete indoors.

“The indoor meet at Redwood has been a good experience for us at HL-O,” declared Hildebrandt, who was the head coach for the Wildcats for the previous five seasons. “With a lot more participants, now that we’ve paired with Fulda’s strong program, we will be able to fill all of the events and compete favorably as teams with both the girls and the boys.”
